Our nanofibers can be potentially used on silver-free antibacterial wound dressing. Our nanofibers can be used with other dressings, possessing the advantages of silver ion dressing while overcoming its disadvantages.
The usage of silver ions in wound dressings would bring a broad antibacterial spectrum and promote wound healing by controlling local infection. Silver ions can also be added to various dressings, such as foamed silver ion dressing, alginate silver dressing, oil gauze silver ion dressing, silver sulfadiazine ointment, and hydrophilic fiber silver dressing.
However, silver ions would bring occasional burning and pain, and cannot be used for patients with silver allergies. Silver ions cannot be combined with the use of iodine and cannot effectively prevent biofilm formation. Absorption of silver ions can cause local silver poisoning, and excessive long-term use or repeated use can cause widespread silver poisoning that accumulates in kidneys, liver and retina.
